Overview

CupArise is an organization that aims to reduce barriers to early detection of breast cancer and empower women to seek timely medical assistance. Their mission focuses on improving health outcomes by increasing rates of early detection. Collaborating with us, CupArise sought to design and develop an accessible digital solution, Mami, to help women recognize breast cancer symptoms at an early stage. The solution was envisioned to enhance awareness and foster connections to care, thereby supporting informed health decisions.

The ask

Most breast cancer patients tend to visit clinics only when their disease has progressed, which limits the chances of successful treatment. CupArise wanted to create a holistic ecosystem combining a social engagement platform and a mobile application to bridge this gap. They initially engaged another provider to develop their app, but the results did not meet expectations. Realizing the need for a more effective and user-friendly solution, they approached us to leverage our expertise in creating accessible tools, with a focus on underserved areas.

The pain points

This project faced several challenges. Our initial goal was to take over development from the previous provider and create a functional digital solution within just two months, with a future revamp planned to enhance engagement. Key challenges included integration with existing systems, as the new architecture needed to align with prior infrastructure and required customizations to resolve compatibility issues. Additionally, authentication in the previous build was problematic, with many users experiencing login difficulties, negatively impacting user experience.

Another pain point was user engagement and adoption; the app’s previous design was not intuitive, making it harder for users to engage with and adopt the platform. The handling of data privacy was also insufficient, especially given the need for strict compliance with health data protection regulations. Ensuring robust security protocols was essential to protect personal health data and establish trust with users. Lastly, we needed a scalable architecture that would allow CupArise to expand the solution into new markets while ensuring smooth maintenance and updates.

The solution

We began by thoroughly assessing the existing infrastructure to identify potential integration points and ensure seamless compatibility. Custom APIs were developed, and extensive testing was conducted to facilitate smooth data flow between systems. To resolve authentication issues, we implemented multiple login options, including Google, Apple, and phone number sign-ups, enhancing both convenience and security.

Our team crafted an intuitive, user-friendly interface following best practices. User acceptance testing was performed to refine the design and ensure it met the needs of end users. To protect sensitive health information, we implemented end-to-end encryption, robust authentication protocols, and transparent privacy policies, complying with all relevant data protection regulations.

The solution was designed with a modular, scalable architecture supported by cloud infrastructure, allowing for flexibility and future growth. This structure ensures the platform can efficiently scale as new features and markets are introduced.

The outcome

Within two months, we launched the first version of Mami and delivered a revamped v2 version in just three additional months. The mobile application became a digital companion for women, empowering them to seek timely medical assistance and make informed health decisions, contributing to improved survival rates. Mami helps users identify early signs of breast cancer, access educational resources, and connect with care navigators.

The platform includes features such as guided breast self-examinations, a menstrual cycle tracker, reminders for regular self-examinations, expert-curated educational content, and gamification elements to encourage monthly check-ups. If users identify concerning symptoms, they can seamlessly connect with a care navigator through the app.

Impact

The CupArise Mami app achieved a 400% increase in downloads after the Phase 1 launch, with significant improvements in user engagement and satisfaction. The user-friendly interface facilitated higher adoption rates among the target audience. The platform’s architecture allowed CupArise to easily scale and expand its features, accommodating increased user demand without compromising performance.
